Ranjit Hoskote

A man who dons many hats – a poet, cultural theorist and curator. A seminal voice in Indian art criticism, Ranjit Hoskote has been pivotal to shaping contemporary art discourse in India, and in registering multiple cultural issues, artistic domains, and moments of history.

In his role as an art critic, Ranjit has authored a critical biography as well as a major retrospective study of the painter Jehangir Sabavala, and also monographs on the artists Atul Dodiya, Tyeb Mehta, Sudhir Patwardhan, Baiju Parthan, Bharti Kher and Iranna GR.

Having curated his first exhibition when he was 25, Ranjit has conceived and organised twenty exhibitions of contemporary Indian as well as international art since 1994. He was recently co-curator of Former West: Documents, Constellations, Prospects, Berlin, 2013. His other curated projects include, The Needle on the Gauge, Contemporary Art Centre of South Australia, Parkside, 2012; Everyone Agrees: It’s About to Explode, Indian Pavilion, 54th Venice Biennale, Venice, 2011.

He has edited the collection Dom Moraes: Selected Poems (2012) and is the author of over 25 books including I, Lalla: The Poems of Lal Ded (2011) and Die Ankunft der Vögel (2006), Zones of Assault, The Cartographer’s Apprentice, The Sleepwalker’s Archive, Vanishing Acts: New & Selected Poems 1985-2005 and Central Time.
